A native Atlantan, Laura Dewberry Surace has had an interest in creating art as long as she can remember. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Carson-Newman College just north of Knoxville, Tennessee and a Master of Fine Arts at Memphis College of Arts, where she won two awards. While in school, she studied the human figure extensively and created a series of figurative works done in large scale using charcoal and acrylic. Laura still enjoys creating these expressive charcoal "portraits", now on canvas, based on a collaboration of old family photos or photos she has found in antique stores. These images seem to tell a story, whether it's in the subject's gaze, or the clothes they are wearing, or perhaps the inclusion of an animal in the artwork with them. After graduating, Laura began to paint landscapes. Drawing inspiration from many of the great Impressionist painters and the bright bold colors of artists like Van Gogh and Cezanne, she creates her own landscapes. Laura hopes the viewer is able to experience the same feelings she attempts to capture in her landscapes—the hot sun shinning on fields yet to be harvested, a rainstorm in the distance, or an unspoiled country side—all these elements to remind us that there is simple beauty around us every day. Recently, she has borrowed the rich colors used in her landscapes to paint abstracts. These paintings are symbolic map-like grids. Raw marks made in charcoals give another dimension to the broad brushstrokes of color as well as act as symbolic markings of nature. An orange circle may represent the sun, or charcoal markings show pathways twisting throughout the painting. Laura has been exhibiting her art for over thirteen years and has had her work shown in several Atlanta galleries, as well as Highpoint, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
